Althea Przybyło-Kroger ALTHEA PRZYBYLO, J.D., M.A. was born in Chicago, but her roots in Poland are deep: all four of her grandparents were born here in "Galicia"! While living in the U.S., Althea was a business woman (the White Eagle Restaurant in Chicago), a lawyer, a judge and a politician (an elected State Senator). She received her J.D. from Vermont Law School and an M.A. from Harvard University. For the last 10 years, Althea has lived and worked in Poland as an English & Leadership Trainer, - specializing in Business English and Autonomous Learning. She is currently a co-partner of "The Althea Institute" in Debica.

Session: PREPARING YOUR ENGLISH LEARNERS FOR "LIFE-LONG LEARNING"

The ability to learn and develop intellectually throughout life is essential for all Polish citizens living in today's fast & ever-changing E.U. world. But such "life-long learning" (continuing to learn long after your students leave you) is impossible without the mastery of "independent learning skills" These skills are especially important when trying to acquire - and then sustain - proficiency in English! Join us while we explore concepts such as "autonomous learning", "learning-to learn" and "school self-access centers" - and how you can incorporate these values into your teaching experience. You have a very important role to play in Poland's future!

Session: TEACHING CONVERSATION FOR THE WORKPLACE

Many of our Business English classes involve conversation - often it happens spontaneously, but it can also be planned. In this workshop, I will take a brief look at some of the options available to teachers to optimize the teaching of conversation, including techniques for focusing on lexis and grammar, treating conversation as discourse, and using a genre approach. The workshop will include background theory as well as some practical activities to take away for your class next Monday morning. This talk is a revised version of the one I gave at the IATEFL BESIG conference in Berlin in 2007.

Rob Dean

Rob has also worked as a DELTA local supervisor and run INSET training for teachers in Private Language Schools for over 10 years; these have included methodology, language analysis, theories of learning and practical classroom approaches.
Rob is particularly interested in task based learning and teaching adults and works for Pearson Longman as a Teacher Trainer.

Session: THOUGHT-PROVOKING APPROACH TO LEARNING ENGLISH & DEVELOPING ADULT LEARNERS' TRANSFERABLE SKILLS

Adult learners are a special sort. They are a part of a knowledge society where they need to be well-informed, assimilate new knowledge quickly and engage with it. They are learning English in order to participate in this society actively. At the same time, they must have a wide range of skills, including the ability to think critically, make decisions, and handle complex global communication. They need transferable skills and traditional language skills to be successful. How can they get practice in these areas in English with thought-provoking topics developing their language skills at the same time?

Grzegorz ¦piewak

GRZEGORZ ¦PIEWAK Teacher, teacher trainer, EFL project manager, adviser and author. Lecturer at the Institute of English Studies, University of Warsaw. Former IATEFL Poland president. Head ELT Consultant for Macmillan Polska. President of DOS-Teacher Training Solutions. Regular speaker at EFL conferences.

Session: TALKING TEXTS

We live in a world of text. More importantly, we teach in a world of text. Texts are where we look for the language, texts are what we use to arouse our learners’ curiosity. Texts, whether spoken or written, are what we create to communicate. And yet, in everyday classroom practice, a text becomes all too often predictable reading comprehension practice or a routine language-focus exercise. This is where our session comes in: we would like to share some ideas for how to open up texts for and with our learners, how to get them to interact with texts - spoken and written, verbal and visual, serious and funny. Activity types will include non-linear, kinetic and visual ways of exploiting texts as well as paraphrasing and genre switching. Some illustration for these will come from the New Inside Out course series.

The conference materials will include sample copies of Inside Out Pre-Intermediate Student’s Book with CD-ROM, Inside Out Pre-Intermediate Workbook with Audio CD and Inside Out Extension Kit CD-ROMS with extra resources.
